What is Tongkat Ali?
Tongkat ali (TA) is increasingly being used in male enhancement and testosterone booster supplements. The following article will discuss the Tongkat ali benefits and side effects.
TA is essentially a medicinal herb native to Southeast Asian countries including Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam. The locals call this plant the Malaysian ginseng, whereas scientists refer to it as Eurycoma longifolia.
The plant contains active ingredients such as eurycomalacton, eurycomanol and eurycomanon that make it ideal for treating a wide range of diseases. According to the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN), TA has found use in enhancing libido, improving sports performance and weight loss, as an anti-ageing remedy, improving a person’s overall wellbeing, and reducing fatigue. Here is a detailed look at Tongkat ali benefits and side effects:
Benefits of Tongkat Ali
Over the years, medical experts have carried out numerous studies to learn more about the benefits of TA. Some of its notable health benefits include:
Tongkat Ali Enhances Sexual Motivation
… Helps You Rediscover Your Passion and Mojo*
If you’re experiencing low T and its associated symptoms (low sex drive, can’t keep your “best friend” up, anxiety, depression, lack of motivation and energy)…
… then you know just how harmful this problem can be. It affects EVERY area of your life and can make you feel like your problems are just TOO MUCH.
Your sex drive is your DRIVING force behind everything you do. When that diminishes (because of low T) men often get depressed.
Luckily, when you reverse this, you rediscover the sense of passion, motivation, adventure and zest for life you had in your 20’s and 30’s.
Multiple studies have shown that Tongkat Ali helps middle aged, sexually sluggish, old, retired mice ENHANCE their sexual motivation by up to 100%.*5-8]
Yes, these are mice studies, which don’t necessarily translate to humans. But where human studies are available, they show much the same thing.9 The fact is, this amazing root is only beginning to be researched. If I were you, I wouldn’t wait until all the research has been done, to see for yourself the difference it can make, just like others have.
Again, here it appears the hormonal and non-hormonal effects of this root are at play.* Upgrading your T will give you the motivation you need to procreate again… which will give you your mojo back!
Acetone and alcoholic extracts from the Malaysian ginseng leaves and stem have potent antibacterial agents, according to the results of a study carried out in Malaysia and published in the Saudi Medical Journal. Extracts used in this study were effective against Staphylococcus, Serratia marscesens, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella typhi bacteria strains.
According to a study published in the ISSN Journal, 200 mg of TA root extract taken every day lowers cortisol levels leading to improvements in one’s stress hormone profile.
A study published in the Japanese Journal of Pharmacology found that this plant is an effective remedy for anxiety . In fact, this study showed that TA produces similar anxiolytic effects as those produced by diazepam.
Testosterone Booster for Men with Late-onset Hypogonadism
Late on-set hypogonadism (LOH) is a condition in which the body’s testosterone production is inadequate. In the US, LOH affects three million men. The good news is this herb’s extracts can improve the Aging Males’ Symptoms (AMS) scores of such men, according to a study published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
100:1 Water Soluble Extract
Many Tongkat Ali products on the market are just ground up root. Besides being mostly ineffective many of these are contaminated with fungus and other toxins.
BEWARE: Other so-called “Tongkat Ali” products aren’t even the herb at all. I wouldn’t trust any Tongkat ali from GNC! Some products were tested to find instead analogues of Sildenafil, the active drug used in most popular ED drugs.10
Thus, we had to go through a number of distributors to find something that met our quality controls. When so many companies are just trying to make a buck we want SOMETHING THAT WORKS. Judging from the feedback so far, this is it.
Here we have a high quality and potent 100:1 water-soluble extract of the Eurycoma longifolia roots.
Testing showed a concentration of:
- 34.91% Saponins
- 54.31% Peptides
Our Tongkat is sourced from Malaysian wild trees that are generally 20-30 years old.
Bitter is better, but Tongkat Ali pushes the limits of this. Not only is it very bitter but the taste will linger in your mouth. It is NOT recommended to add Tongkat to drinks or food as it will likely make them unpalatable.
Here’re two options. First, MAN UP! If you take it regularly you’ll get used to the taste and it won’t bother you so much anymore. Or place some water or other liquid in your mouth, hold it there while you scoop your Longjack in, and swallow it all down without tasting much.
Some people have reported making Tongkat Ali coffee. The bitterness may go well with the bitterness of coffee, but unless there is a tiny dose it probably won’t be the best thing to drink.
Tongkat Ali Side Effects
In spite of the benefits detailed above, TA does have some side effects. However, such effects are generally mild and there is no evidence of serious liver or renal function, according to the NIH. In addition, not all people who take the Malaysian ginseng extracts experience negative effects.
With this in mind, potential TA effects include:
Increased metabolic body heat. To counter this side effect, you should increase your daily water intake
Insomnia. TA can cause insomnia as the body gets used to its effect. To avoid this, it is advisable to start with small doses if taking the plant’s extracts for the first time
Abnormally high levels of testosterone may increase irritability, impatience and restlessness
Just like any other medication, exceeding the recommended daily dosage can prove dangerous. An NIH publication recommends 50 to 200 mg per day of water-extracted Eurycoma longifolia root standardized to 22% eurypeptides
TA’s bitter taste may put off some people. However, the NIH warns that Eurycoma longifolia extracts that do not taste bitter are either fake or sub-potent
