Sarsaparilla (Smilax medica) is a woody, thorny climbing vine native to Mexico and Central America. Its long roots are harvested and dried, and have a mild, earthy, slightly sweet and bitter flavor. Our sarsaparilla is wildcrafted, gathered from the wild rather than cultivated, so availability varies with the harvest.
Traditional Use: Sarsaparilla root was the original flavoring for the soft drink of the same name, which became one of the most popular drinks of the American Old West.
Ingredients: Wildcrafted sarsaparilla root (Smilax medica), cut and sifted.
