The largest pyramid in North America is a hill you’ve driven past. Monks Mound in southern Illinois covers more ground at its base than the Great Pyramid of Giza. There were no wheels on this continent. No carts, no oxen. Every ounce of it was carried up by hand in a basket, about fifteen million trips. A hundred and twenty mounds stood around it, in a city six square miles wide. In 1150, more people lived there than in London. No European ever saw it. It was empty a century before Columbus. Then settlers decided Native people couldn’t have built it and that’s what got taught in schools for the next hundred years. There is a country buried underneath this one. And you’re standing on it right now.
