Nanook of the North: A Story of Life and Love in the Actual Arctic is a 1922 silent documentary directed by Robert J. Flaherty, depicting the life of an Inuk man named Nanook (played by Allakariallak) and his family in the Canadian Arctic. Released by Pathé Exchange and produced by the French fur-trading company Revillon Frères, the film became an international phenomenon, proved the commercial viability of documentary cinema, and in 1989 was selected by the Library of Congress as one of the first twenty-five films preserved in the United States National Film Registry. Viewers see the construction of an igloo, the hunting of walrus and seal, kayak travel, sled dogs, and family life in one of the harshest environments on Earth.
However, Nanook is also a foundational document of what scholars now call salvage ethnography; a colonial-era practice that filmed Indigenous peoples as vanishing primitive curiosities for Western audiences. Flaherty staged significant portions: the woman shown as Nanook’s wife was actually Flaherty’s own common-law partner, the igloo interior was a half-shell set, and the Inuit were directed to hunt with spears though they had used rifles for decades. Allakariallak himself died less than two years after filming — Flaherty claimed of starvation, though Inuit oral history points to tuberculosis.
For these reasons, Nanook is best approached not as transparent documentation but as a primary source for studying how early cinema constructed colonial narratives, how filmmakers stage what audiences accept as reality, and how moving images have long served as instruments of cultural framing and behavioral influence.
This film is in the public domain in the United States and is presented here for educational and critical purposes as part of Blair University’s ongoing mission to preserve, contextualize, and share humanity’s hidden visual heritage.
