AT&T and Intel announced during Mobile World Congress last month that they will begin testing drones to see how they perform on an LTE network.
LTE networks are already used to connect devices on the ground, including cell phones and tablets. But supporting functions on a drone like live camera views, feeds from sensors, and operating a drone beyond line of sight require connectivity while in flight. The AT&T Internet of Things (IoT) team and the AT&T Foundry innovation center in Palo Alto, Calif., will work with Intel to evaluate video streaming, transmitting telematics, and flight information via the LTE network from drones at high altitudes.
