Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is a plant in the legume family, grown for its small, golden-brown, cube-shaped seeds. The seeds have a warm, nutty, slightly bitter flavor with a maple-like aroma that deepens when toasted, and are a key ingredient in curry powders and spice blends.
Traditional Use: Fenugreek is one of the oldest cultivated spices, used for thousands of years in the cooking of India, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Mediterranean.
Ingredients: Organic whole fenugreek seeds (Trigonella foenum-graecum).
Size: 4 oz.
Suggested use: Toast lightly in a dry pan or in oil to bring out the flavor, then add to curries, dals, pickles, and spice blends, or grind into a powder. Seeds can also be sprouted for salads. For tea, lightly crush 1 teaspoon and simmer in 8 oz of water for 5-10 minutes, then strain.
Caution: Safe in normal food amounts. If pregnant, avoid amounts larger than those used in cooking, including fenugreek tea. Consult a healthcare provider before using in larger amounts if you are nursing, taking medication, especially blood-thinning or blood sugar medication, or have a medical condition. Contains fenugreek, a legume; avoid if allergic to legumes, including peanuts or chickpeas. May give sweat and urine a harmless maple-like scent. Keep out of reach of children. Store in a sealed container in a cool, dry place.
