We’ve got one of the rainforest’s true treasures for you today: Dragon’s Blood (Croton lechleri), the deep crimson sap the Amazon calls sangre de grado, “blood of the dragon.” Ours is 100% raw Croton lechleri sap, tapped straight from the living tree. One ingredient. Nothing diluted, nothing added.
When you score the bark of the Croton lechleri tree, it weeps a thick, blood-red latex, which is where the name comes from. Several unrelated plants around the world have carried the “dragon’s blood” name over the centuries (a Chinese Dracaena resin, a Socotran tree, a Southeast Asian palm), but the one in this bottle is the Amazonian original: Croton lechleri, native to the upper Amazon basin of Peru and Ecuador. The indigenous peoples of that region have worked with this sap for centuries, and it remains one of the most treasured items in their botanical tradition.
What makes the sap so distinctive is what’s in it; it’s remarkably rich in plant polyphenols, including proanthocyanidins and the alkaloid taspine, the compounds researchers keep returning to when they study this plant. You can feel its character the moment you use it: it’s naturally, powerfully astringent. It has been traditionally used externally and internally, and I’ll walk you through both.
Using it on the skin
Put a few drops in the palm of your hand. Take a fingertip and rub in a slow circle, and watch something almost alchemical happen. The runny red sap thickens and turns into a silky, pale cream right before your eyes. Smooth that over the skin and let it dry down into a natural protective film. Traditionally, sangre de grado has been valued across Amazonian herbalism as a topical botanical for everyday skin support, prized for its astringent, film-forming quality.
Taking it internally
A few drops by mouth, or stirred into a little water, be warned, it’s bracingly astringent, so a little goes a long way. Traditionally used to support everyday digestive comfort. Those same polyphenols have been studied for their antioxidant activity, which is to say the sap helps support the body’s normal response to the everyday oxidative stress we all live with.
Why ours
100% raw, wild-harvested Croton lechleri sap, no fillers, no preservatives, no dilution. Just the pure sap the way the forest makes it, which also means color and consistency will vary a little from batch to batch, exactly as a living botanical should. This is one of the items I keep at home at all times and one of the first things I pack when I travel.
Suggested use
Topical: apply a thin layer to clean skin as needed. Internal: 5–10 drops in a little water, up to twice daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Shake before use. Store in a cool, dark place.
